Is the UK a huge traffic jam?

The UK countryside is beautiful in summer, but as we arrived in Hull on the overnight ferry from Rotterdam all we were met with was a huge traffic jam on the A63 out of the city. The UK I fear has become a huge car park. It was a shock to the system after quiet traffic jam free roads in Norway. Read our blog about our motorhome tour of Norway here

Rotterdam to Hull ferry

I’m really impressed with this ferry service. The Pride of Rotterdam ferry, operated by P&O, is like a cruise ship. The Brasserie Restaurant in particular, where we enjoyed a very nice meal, is a calm oasis with great service and excellent food. We prebooked our meals in The Brasserie, but when you arrive on-board you need to go to the restaurant to book your meal time.

I can never fathom how ferry operators load motorhomes on to a ferry. We were 3rd in the queue at Rotterdam ferry terminal but ended up being nearly last on. Having booked what turned out to be a very small 2 berth inside cabin we had arrived early with the intention of upgrading our cabin, as we had done on the outbound journey, but because we were last on we were told that there were no longer upgrades available. Very annoying!

Harrogate Caravan and Motorhome Park

Motorhome full timers don’t have a house to go back to in the UK so when back in the UK we have to use campsites or rely on friends and relatives to offer us their driveway to park on, so our first night was spent with our good friends Lynne and Mark, who also cooked us a very nice meal, baked a wonderful birthday cake for Anne and all washed down with a good bottle of champagne. A perfect welcome back to Yorkshire.

After the traffic jam we arrived at Harrogate caravan park

Our 2nd night in the UK was spent at the excellent Harrogate Caravan and Motorhome Park. This site is well run, has immaculate pitches and as an added bonus is next door to Fodder farm shop and Sainsbury’s. Coincidentally, this was the night when England beat Columbia in the World Cup and we witnessed the whole match in a local pub!

Royal Vale Caravan Park, Knutsford

Our next stay, for 2 nights, was Royal Vale Caravan Park. It’s a very quiet countryside location on the A50. Serviced pitches and a good shower block make this a popular place, although you need a car to explore the wider area.

Living in a motorhome is a good life. Beds are comfortable and we have eveything we need. It might be a small home but we have a gigantic garden! Having said that the prospect of 2 nights in a luxury 4 star hotel was very appealing so 2 great nights were spent with our daughters, husbands and grandson and full use of the leisure club facilities was made.

Next stop Portsmouth ferry port. We are going to France!

Was it worth coming over to the U.K.? That is a flying visit.

It’s always good to see family and friends. Can’t go too long without seeing our new grandson. Arrive in the north, leave in the south. Perfect!
