Here is a great gadget tip for motorhome drivers in Europe. One of the problems I have is that I can’t see the motorhome speedometer on my Fiat Ducato motorhome. As there are a lot of speed cameras in France, where we spend a lot of time, it’s, obviously, important to be able to see the speed that I am driving at. This is especially the case because it is very hard to see your speed in kmh let alone mph.
The solution for your motorhome speedometer!
I use an old mobile phone, without a sim card, together with a free speedometer app. on it to show my speed in kmh. It uses GPS and no internet is needed. The great thing is that your speed is very clear and I have found the speed to be very accurate.
Testing the speedometer app
If you drive a motorhome in France you will know that many French villages have speed radars that display your speed. On our recent visit to France we drove through at least 15 villages that had a speed radar display as we entered the village. On every occasion the display on my speedometer app exactly matched or was 1 kmh out what was shown on the French speed radar. Whilst this is not an exact science about the accuracy of speedometer apps it is accurate enough for me, and it gives me peace of mind that I am not exceeding the speed limit.
Speed traps in France are not easily visible like they are in the UK and many motorists are caught for speeding.
My motorhome satnav also tells me if I am exceeding the speed limit and this is an added safeguard.
There are many motorhome speedometer apps on Google and Apple. Just dig out an old mobile phone, download a speedometer app and give it a go! I also bought myself a cheap phone holder from Amazon that sticks to the dashboard, and it works a treat.
